What is MBT?

Masai Barefoot Technology or MBT is not just a shoe in the ordinary sense it is a revolutionary fitness aid from SwissMasai. This product will not only change the way you use your muscles, but will improve the use of your joints and spine. The uniquely designed sole, combined with correct training, achieves a more active and healthy posture and walk.

Through its unique design of its multilayered sole, MBT transforms flat, hard, artificial surfaces into natural uneven surfaces, simulating the walking action of our barefoot ancestors.

Unlike most conventional training shoes that support and cushion your feet, the unique construction of MBT challenges the sole, and the muscles used to form your posture, to be more active.

This reactive, more supportive muscle action increases shock absorption for joints and discs.

Walking more upright not only looks better but automatically makes us healthier and stronger. The back and joints are strengthened, circulation is increased and breathing is more efficient. MBT lengthens and strengthens the whole body while standing, walking or in gentle running.

The function of MBT is similar to that of balancing a ball under the foot.

Increased input-response makes it easier for the musculature to react adequately. After ground contact there is a rolling movement, starting from a negative heel position (1). This creates a pre-stretch of the calf muscles. The straightening of the body, the balancing on the mid-foot (2) and the pull-through of the step to the back (3) initiates a rotation, which follows through the whole body. This results in an active and natural posture and gait.

If you have narrow feet these shoes are great, but I have worn MBT's for 3 years now and I still love the lace up version or the sandal style. The price is great but for long term comfort these are not my favorite designs.

I'm 45 years old & love to be active. Had a couple of bicycle crashes 3 or 4 years ago and combined with degenerative disks developed chronic back complaints. The chiropractor helped tremendously, but soon found out that my back wouldn't allow me to do the things I loved like gardening, much less exercise. I decided to try MBT shoes & purchased a pair of sneakers. I couldn't believe the muscles in my core that fatigued after a couple of hours. After a couple of weeks of upping the wear time I soon noticed fewer knee, FEET & back complaints. So, I ordered a pair of MBT sandals. Then, a pair of boots, (although I really wanted the hiking boot which is discontinued), then my last pair these Mary Jane's. Love, Love, Love! The seemingly small difference of improved core strength, not to mention some seriously toned legs, has improved my metabolism. And I'm noticing a gradual change in my strength & health. I wouldn't have believed a simple change in shoes could change the direction of ones health. So, if your doing pretty much everything you should or can to maintain health and find you just don't get the results you feel you should, then TRY MBT SHOES! As a testament to my improved status, I have around an acre vegetable garden this year, along with my asparagus beds. I just need a pair of MBT shoes that clean as easily as my C____ to wear in the garden. Then every waking moment can be spent with my feet in a pair of MBT shoes. Seriously.

After purchasing my first pair of MBT's I have not worn anything else. They are the most confortable shoes I have ever worn. I had a physician working long hours on his feet in the ER and suggested I try the MBT's since I also was on my feet most of the day. He was absolutely correct, the MBT's are the best! I did spill paint on one pair, so now I even have a comfortable pair of shoes I can do messy work in, like varnishing the rails on the boat! These shoes make great boating shoes. This is my third pair of MBTs. They are the best things for my feet. The Mary-Jane aspect can be an issue, even with an MBT, if an ankle strap and less support cause swelling -- as they can under some circumstances with my arthritic foot. But the other foot loves them and has no complaints. (The athletic MBTs are the only shoes I have that my foot does not swell from wearing under ANY circumstances. )

These are the first MBTs I've received compliments on from the uninitiated. They do look good on the foot and the blue color is rather neutral. I wear black shoes most of the time and don't feel "weird" wearing these.

The Kaya is a great walking shoe, light weight and airy. Buy as recommended 1/2 size bigger and they will fit perfectly. They also actually look better in person than in the photos.

Style is less clunky than many MBTs, and feels ever so slightly lighter (probably because there is less shoe). The toe box is not spacious - much less room than my other MBTs ( Raja, Gil Gil, sandals), but by sizing up a full size, fits fine. Although not quite as comfortable as my previous MBTs, it is still much more comfortable than other shoes. Bottom line: very good shoe.

I was very excited about MBT shoes when I read about them so I wanted to give them a try, and this shoe was one that didn't have exorbitant price. And I like the design. The color (denim) is great - I love the look.
I use these shoes for everyday walking, when I am not at work. They are very interesting in it that they have round soles and make you assume a certain posture.
However, I cannot wear them to work, unless I dress very casually, and because I ride bike to work and they have round soles. They are also a bit stiff, and sometimes I have pain in the area around my 4th toe of my left foot. But I think they need some time to get used to. It's probably better to wear them all the time, but as I said I can't.
Definitely I feel my muscles working. Not that I became athletic overnight or anything, but still...
I am still trying them out to see if I want to buy another pair.

I am a nurse and work 12 hour shifts. I wore the shoes only partial shift the first time, then the next night, I wore them the entire 12 hours. My legs nor feet ever hurt. They do make you a few inches taller so that was strange when I would bend over to pick something off of the floor, but other than that, I now wear them to work, or even out for errand with jeans. I get many questions and comments from others regarding their comfort and I sing their praises. Please order 1/2 size larger. I went to store in town and tried the shoes on prior to ordering them online, which was cheaper.

This is a great shoe to pair with casual wear on the weekend. It's cute-ish, incredibly comfortable, and puts a spring in my step. I wear MBT sneakers (Boost) for dogwalking, the treadmill, etc., and wanted another pair that I could keep nice looking for hitting the farmer's market and stuff like that. These were just the ticket. I personally wouldn't wear them with dressy clothes, but if you had the right style you could probably pull them off with a skirt or dress. MBTs are true to size within the European system, but if you haven't bought them before, round up rather than down. I wear an 8 in US sizing and need a 39.6 in MBTs.

I have several pairs of MBTs, including sandals & hiking boots, but I wanted a less bulky style that I could wear out shopping or with jeans. These are so cute! I ordered this style in a size 5.5 because I wanted to wear thin socks or stockings. My other shoes are size 6 because I wear hiking socks with them. They fit perfectly with no wearing in time as I am used to wearing MBTs. I can walk for hours without my feet hurting. It's as if my "toes" come along for the ride when I wear them as there is absolutely no pressure on the balls of my feet!

The cushoining is supurb. The sizing is a half smaller than the size, so order one half size larger. I don't know if the bottom of the sole is as thick as the other shoes. I wonder if it will stand up to the omount of walking I do. The other models seem to.

I love these shoes. They are amazingly springy and comfortable. Despite looking slightly orthopedic with the thick soles, of the MBTs I find these to be one of the cutest styles. I have worn these to walk around the neighborhood, to work, on stairs and in airports with no problems. (They are fantastic at the airport - so easy to slip on and off). I even wore them in 6 inches of snow (when I had no alternative at the time) and they were wonderfully stable. I expected to feel a bit wobbly on the curved sole, but it actually makes walking easier and I feel I walk a bit faster because the shoes provide a nice bounce to your step. I am looking forward to my next pair of MBTs. Totally worth it.

I do think that they run about a half size small. I normally wear a 9 with socks and 8.5 in sandals. I ordered a 9 in these and can only wear really thin socks with them. My next pair will be 9.5.

I wear MBT's almost every day. This practice (since August 2008, it is now January 2009) has improved my back health and assisted in curing my bilateral achilles tendontis. My legs are more toned than ever. I wear more funky clothes to make up for the missing style. I really was into shoes for style, but I am on my feet so much that I am sold on MBT. The only reason I clicked need break in is not for the shoes but for your body. MBTs are best when broken in slowly or else expect your muscles to complain the next day. I wore these to work on a day that I knew I would be running around all day and sure enough later that day my stomache and glutes were a little sore. However my back felt great! I have a disc problem and sometimes standing and walking all day makes it hurt pretty bad but in the MBTs my back feels great!

I think this is the best overall feeling shoe that I have ever purchased for both my fallen arches and my left foot hammer toe. I would be in orthopedic shoes without MBT's. I probably still need a little more room at the base of my toes for my arthritic left toe. I love to just walk and rock on them. It is a joy to walk and not get so tired now. This shoe feels great and is so easy to get used to. I thought it would take a while but not so. I feel the need to balance while wearing the shoes which keeps your legs in constant resistance, however it doesn't seem like work....

This is my 4th pair of MBT's and I love them! They are extremely comfortable and allow me to walk for hours without any foot pain. I have other well known brands of "walking" shoes in my closet that are going to Goodwill, because I don't use them anymore. I have MBT sandals and sneakers. Even though they look different on the outside, they all feel the same when I wear them. I did not experience any break-in period with these shoes. They were extremely comfortable right from the box! The first time I wore MBT's it did take about 5 minutes to become accustomed to the different feeling of these shoes. I had a smile on my face as I felt I was walking on a cloud!

I love MBT's. My only wish is to find some that I can wear with work attire. I was hoping to find it in these Mary-Janes, but alas, did not. They are too low on the foot, and felt like they were cutting into the base of my toes. They do run a half size small, but feel that even if I had gotten a half size bigger, the style would still have been uncomfortable. I really like my other MBTs and wear them a lot. I may have to just get a pair of the clogs in black. I love those.

I am a nurse and work 12 days. Shoes have been a problem lately due to feet, ankle and heel pain. I tried the MBT's and survived two 12 hour days in a row with no pain! The break in time for the MBT's is quick and my legs did not feel sore after wearing them for 2 days straight. You do need to walk in them how MBT instructs you to get the full benefit of the cushion and to maintain proper posture which takes a little practice. Thank you MBT!

These shoes DO run a half size small. Actually, I wear a 9 women's but I ordered the 40 1/3 in the Kisumu sandals but a 41 in the Kaya or Bolt, i.e. any closed toe MBT. My first pair of Kisumu was a 39 2/3 which I CAN and do wear, but I prefer the 40 1/3 because the pivot point is better for me in that size. So far I have FIVE pairs of the mbt and would love to have other colors of the Kaya.

I have had my MBTs w/the 2" heel for 5yrs. and love them; but they are not the most stylish. These blue Kayas are still the clunky MBTs but blend in with jeans and so are less obvious and "Frankenstein like." They are good for just running around and doing errands in. They are discontinuing this color and it was a great price so I jumped on it and am happy I did. The MBTs are so comfortable. Your stride is cushioned because you really roll through your feet, and the added benefit is toning for your legs. I got a half size larger and it was perfect.

As my age increases, so does my interest in comfort and health. I ordered these shoes for the benefits in posture and muscle strength but am also enjoying the added benefit of comfort. I ordered a half size larger than normal as suggested and the shoe fits fine--no pressure or discomfort at any point. The color looks great with jeans. I use this all the time except when it is snowing and very cold. it does work my lower legs out. it feels a little snug as I have wide feet.

These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I have a foot problem and these are the only shoes that work for me! I really could not walk. A friend showed me his MBT's. He stands on their feet all day suggested these might be helpful for me. He did add they were a bit pricy. I say they are worth every penny! I put the MBT's on and could walk immediately. Seriously, these are the best! I am currently ordering another pair....so that makes pair #3.

I am a nurse working 12 hour shifts. I used to have heel, shin, calf, back and sometimes hip pain. After 3 days of working, I hardly could walk for at least a day. Now I can walk after work. Last 3 days I even walk up the 7 floor stairs x4 during my breaks. Unbelievable!!! Today, I ordered 2 more pairs (different colors) to rotate. These shoes are always comfortable and they help my sore feet feel better. They are great for dancers' sore feet, particularly after being on pointe for an extended time. They are great for walking and commuting but they don't always match my outfits and they are expensive.

These are great shoes for my lifestyle. I live in New York so I do a lot of walking. These take me from morning to casual evenings and look great with jeans, shorts or a fun skirt. I own 2 other pairs of MBT's (a sneaker and a sandal) and admit that these are my most versatile pair. The soles are super durable as you never scuff on the heels, so even though they may seem a little pricey, the quality more than makes up for it.

You are going to love these shoes! MBTs are just amazing. You may be skeptical, with all of the promises made about them. They really are incredible. I got my first pair very shortly after a difficult pregnancy. They helped me get my lags back into shape-and strengthened my core. I now own three pair, these are the cutest of the three. I LOVE THESE SHOES!

I love MBT's this is my fourth pair. they are so comfortable and they really do work. I have lost one pant size from walking in these. My legs are slimmer and more toned and my butt is also more toned! Very expensive but worth it! Only problem is getting the right size, they are all different. I usually wear a nine in a closed shoe had to go up half size on these. The Gil Gil never found the correct size so they are a little big. [...]
